I know what you are saying. 100% agree with you. I am a parent right now with my sons born here. I bet my sons would be more desi than anybody in there nanke or dadke family. Even mine & my husband's Punjabi is more pure and desi Panjabi than rest of family who lives in Punjab.
I want my sons to know the real Punjabi... the real India.I wanted my First born to be a Sardar.. it was in India where they cut his hair. Me and Ajay just crave for any movie or song which has a vision of India. We hate those videos from Punjabi & Hindi songs .. those girls are not from Canada or US they are half naked Punjabi girls or Indian Girls whose parents must be so 'Proud' of them of being so Modern. I am more desi now than I was 6 years ago. My accent is more Punjabi. I love all those old Punjabi sounds doesn't matter it is Chamkila or shamshad begum.

When I was going to start my Ph Ed (Doctorate in Punjabi Language) My subject was Punjabi literature written by writers out of India. There was this sentence by one of them that 'The people when leave there country.. they leave it physically but there mind set is stuck in same era' It is True. 100% TRUE. I still live in 2001. When my friends tell me that things have been changed and we are even advanced than anywhere else.. I do not feel like going back. I do not want to ruin my good memories which make me feel happy in my down moments.
So dear I know what Rai & Tristan would feel. We call are going start calling Tristan 'Jora' by the time he will know this is part of his middle name and he wont get confused that we are calling someone else. I guess In India nick names are more modern than Jora. Isn't it.
You are not wrong. I am feeding all the good things in my kids and want them to be good. I would never preach anything to them which I wont do. I guess in India this is too common when parents say. Do not tell lies.. that is bad and when it comes to do what they say it is On the phone they would tell their kids to answer tell them mommy /daddy is not home.. though they are sitting next to them. This is messing up innocent minds. Kids are alike every where.. it is just bringing up what makes the difference. Change gharan di parvarish aaj vi changi hi hai chahe ithe hai jaan India wich. I am born and brought up in India. I can bet I was more innocent and pure hearted than any girl who I knew. I met only one girl like me and she is my best friend till date.
